College Graduation, May 2019
In May 2019, five Citizen Scholars from the class of 2015 graduated from college! Students graduated from Furman University, Wofford College, and University of South Carolina Upstate. Graduate Christopher Yang said this about his experience in Citizen Scholars: “Thank you. It was all thanks to you guys guiding us. If it wasn’t for the Citizen Scholars program, who knows where I would be today.” We wish them luck in their future adventures!
Spartanburg Program Showcased Before Southern City Leaders
Spartanburg County was recently chosen as a community to participate in an economic development initiative. The Spartanburg County Foundation was selected to participate in the MDC's Network of Southern Economic Mobility that is focused on creating opportunities for youth and adults in the lowest income bracket.
The Citizen Scholars Program was recently recognized at the Spring convening. Representatives from Fayetteville, NC, Little Rock, AR, Savannah and Athens, GA, Chattanooga, TN, and Jacksonville, FL, were in attendance, as well as MDC and Spartanburg representatives. Three Citizen Scholars Alumni were asked to speak as a panel to the audience. Rickey Jones, Graduate of 2008, Tanae Copeland, Graduate of 2012, and Ashley Cox, Graduate of 2015 discussed the impact of Citizen Scholars in their life and how their academic and professional careers were improved by the Program. They are pictured below with MDC President David Dodson.
